20 June 2010

On 18 June 2010 Deputy Prime-Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration, Iurie leanca paid a visit to Tallinn, Republic of Estonia. During his visit, the head of the Moldovan diplomacy had meetings with the President of the country, Toomas Hendrik Ilves, the Head of Parliament, Ene Ergma, and the Prime-Minister Andrus Ansip, who sent strong messages of support for the democratic changes taking place in Moldova at present. At the same time, the Agreement on Mutual Promotion and Protection of Investments between the Government of Moldova and the Government of Estonia was signed.

Within a press conference upon the conclusion of talks with the Estonian officials, Iurie Leanca stated that the tight cooperation of our country with Estonia, the existing political dialogue, and the mutual interest in advancing such dialogue represent the expression of Moldova’s commitment to the European values and confirm our resolved tendency to achieve European integration.

Thanking the Estonian side for the constant support provided to Moldova both bilaterally and multilaterally, particularly within the European institutions, the Moldovan Foreign Minister mentioned that the Chisinau Government is fully aware of the complexity of tasks it has to fulfill, and the importance of fully involving the entire Moldovan society in the achievement of the proposed objectives on its way to the European integration. “The actual steps undertaken by the Government of my country show our firm decision of achieving the priority goal: Moldova’s accession to the EU”, - the Deputy Prime-Minister stated.

Noting the importance of launching the dialogue with the EU on visa liberalization for the Moldovan citizens, the high Estonian officials mentioned that the responsiveness of the EU and the member states to the positive signals from Chisinau depends on the Moldovan authorities’ activeness and the progress made by our country in fulfilling the requirements in this area. This would expand the number of Moldovan supporters, among which Estonia has a particular place.

Iurie Leanca gave a high appreciation to Estonia’s role in carrying out EU assistance projects, as well as to its support within the informal group “Moldova’s Friends”. At the same time, both sides observed the as yet unharnessed opportunities in terms of bilateral relations, particularly in the commercial and economic areas.

In this connection, the Estonian Foreign Minister mentioned the importance of signing, within the same visit, the Agreement on Mutual Promotion and Protection of Investments, which aims at further promoting the bilateral economic relations.
