Issues on visa regime facilitation discussed in Chisinau

The third meeting of the joint committee for assessing the implementation of the EU-Moldova agreement on re-admission of people with illegal stay and the fifth meeting of the joint committee for assessing the implementation of the visa regime facilitation between EU and Moldova were held in Chisinau on 26-27 May. Moldova's delegation was led by the secretary-general of the Foreign and European Integration Ministry, Mihai Capatina, the Foreign and European Integration Ministry's mass media and public relations directorate has said.

At the meeting of the he joint committee for assessing the implementation of the EU-Moldova agreement on re-admission of people with illegal stay, the sides presented statistic information on the re-admission of Moldovan citizens and those from third countries. The sides ascertained cases of improper implementation of the agreement. The participants in the meeting discussed the latest evolutions in the process of negotiations and signing of additional protocols on the implementation of the concerned agreement between Moldova and the EU member states, as well as of the agreements on re-admission with third countries. Representatives of the European Commission visited a placement centre for foreigners where they took knowledge of the conditions of foreign citizens' accommodation.

The goal of the meeting of the joint committee for assessing the implementation of the visa regime facilitation between EU and Moldova was to consider cases of improper implementation of the agreement by the EU states, to agree on a string of amendments to the agreement to as to extend facilities for Moldovan citizens to get visas and to inform about the domestic procedures necessary to start the re-negotiation of the concerned agreement. The European Commission's representatives informed about the provisions of a new EU Visa Code. The sides agreed to identify additional mechanisms which will facilitate the Moldova-EU cooperation in the visa policies field.

At the end of the meeting, the Moldovan side informed about the steps taken to launch the dialogue on the visa regime liberalization on 15 June 2010, a meeting of the Moldova-EU Cooperation Council. Moldova's representatives reiterated willingness to organise an European Commission mission to evaluate the needs in the visa legalization regime in Chisinau as soon as possible, so as to identify the necessary conditions in the fields of justice, freedom and security.
