EU-Moldova-Ukraine meeting on border issues

The eighth trilateral meeting Moldova-Ukraine-EU focused on border issues has been held in Brussels. Deputy Foreign and European Integration Minister Andrei Popov headed Moldova's delegation to the event.

The officials discussed the management of the Moldovan-Ukrainian border, cooperation between border control services and EU's assistance. Particular attention was paid to the level of border security, implementation of Moldovan-Ukrainian agreements on customs control, border demarcation, prevention and fight against corruption, as well as development of interaction with the EU Border Assistance Mission to Moldova and Ukraine.

The participants in the meeting welcomed progress in border security, mainly on the Transnistrian border segment, and agreed to further cooperate in order to foil negative phenomena at the border and to implement European standards of integrated border management. Representatives of Moldovan and Ukrainian customs and border guard services confirmed willingness to launch a pilot project on joint border control at the Briceni-Rososeni checkpoint. The contribution of the EU Border Assistance Mission to Moldova and Ukraine to the consolidation of border security and its assistance was highly appreciated.

The EU representatives reiterated willingness to further back cooperation between the Moldovan and Ukrainian authorities in order to step up border security on the basis of European standards and to offer assistance necessary to this end.
