Moldova-Estonia political consultations

On 14 January Moldovan-Estonian political consultations between Ministries of Foreign Affairs took place in Chişinău. The delegations were headed by Andrei Popov, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration of the Republic of Moldova, and Harri Tiido, Undersecretary for Political Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Estonia.

In the framework of the consultations there were discussed subjects related to Moldovan-Estonian bilateral relations, Estonian development assistance, the process of European integration of the Republic of Moldova, as well as international political issues. The sides highlighted the fruitful Moldovan-Estonian dialogue and the necessity to further strengthen it through organizing bilateral high level visits.

There was made an exchange of opinions regarding the European integration aspirations of the Republic of Moldova, mostly in the context of the initiation on January 12, 2010, of the negotiations on the Association Agreement between the Republic of Moldova and the European Union, here being underlined the priorities of the Moldovan side for the near future – the internal reforms in order to comply with EU standards, the initiation of the RM-EU dialogue on visa liberalization regime for Moldovan citizens, diversifying the informational system, judicial reforms and increasing the degree of popularity and knowledge about the EU in the Republic of Moldova. In the same context, the Estonian side was invited to take part at the working meetings of the Club of friends of the Republic of Moldova, which includes as well Romania, Lithuania, Poland and Hungary.

Both sides appreciated the constructive dialogue of the political Moldovan-Estonian consultations and decided to continue this practice, convening that the next round will take place in Tallinn.
