Another issue of the GDISC ERIT Newsletter

18 September 2009

Since the launching of the project in 2008, GDISC ERIT Ukraine (Capacity Building and Technical Support to Ukrainian Authorities to Effectively Respond to Irregular Transit-Migration) has so far very successfully addressed the current needs of Ukrainian migration authorities by applying the special methodology of state-to-state exchange of experience. The project pays attention to both the rights of migrants and state security interests in migration management. The capacity building activities take place in 6 modules/areas: screening centres, asylum procedure, country of origin information, detention, return, and visa. In addition to procuring equipment and conducting trainings and workshops, the project provides on-the-spot support, study tours to project partner states and creates a platform for policy-making dialogue in different working groups. The project also raises the awareness of various institutional and migration policy aspects, which have emerged as a consequence of the planned migration reform in Ukraine and the possible establishment of a central migration authority. Using the state-to-state experience exchange concept the project, based on good practices in EU Member States, develops tailored solutions for current challenges in Ukraine.

An informative bulletin called the GDISC ERIT Newsletter, distributed bi-monthly, informs the project partners, Ukrainian counterparts, as well as other international and non-governmental organisations active in Ukraine on the latest developments in the project. The Newsletter includes an overview of all planned activities with the aim to ensure a certain level of co-ordination.
