| 23 July 2009 the EU Border Assistance Mission to Moldova and Ukraine (EUBAM) conducted a training event for the Ukrainian State Border Guard Service on conflict solving with travelers. The seminar took place from 21-24 July in Odesa. The training event presented German experience in improving the conflict management, intercultural competence and hospitality skills of border guards working with travellers. The border guards are the first to meet foreign visitors to Ukraine. This makes them an important part of the country’s image. In addition, the training event helped to prepare for the increased traffic of visitors from abroad during the European Football Championship in 2012. The training was delivered by two German experts with over 30 years of training experience in the German Federal Police. 21 representatives of border control departments from airports in Odesa, Simferopol, and Borispol; from regional Directorates of Lugansk, Kharkov, Chop, Mogylev-Podolskiy, Kotovsk and border guard headquarters in Kyiv participated in this training. The course included role-plays and practical lessons that prepared participants for possible conflict situations with people crossing the border. The training programme was developed together with German experts and adapted for the needs of the Ukrainian border guard. 1300 representatives of Moldovan and Ukrainian agencies took part in EUBAM training events in 2008. EUBAM training programme aims to promote the implementation of EU border management standards in Moldova and Ukraine. EUBAM training events were held both, in the field and on the central level and also included study visits to the EU countries. A wide range of subjects were presented during the training, including illegal import of vehicles, public relations, detection of forged documents, anti-corruption initiatives, customs valuation, combating organized crime, and trafficking in human beings.
