11 March 2009 ECRE's Eastern Europe team has recently published a collection of refugee stories from Belarus, Moldova, the Russian Federation and Ukraine. The stories were based on interviews conducted over summer 2008 by refugee-assisting organisations in the four Eastern European countries, as part of ECRE's project "The Protection of refugees, asylum seekers and forced migrants" funded by the European Union. 100 asylum seekers, recognised refugees, internally displaced persons and refused applicants identified from among their own client groups in the four countries have been interviewed by ECRE's NGO project partners. 40 published stories have been gathered from a wide geographical area, from the North Caucasus to the borders of the European Union. The people interviewed share their stories, on the barriers they face in trying to integrate into their new host society and starting a new life there, others are still traumatised by their flight. Some feel at such risk that they are not able to look ahead, and await further assistance with resettlement to another foreign country. The publication is available on the website of ECRE in English and Russian: http://www.ecre.org/resources/ECRE_actions/1322 |
