Moldova-EU Mobility Partnership

23 September, Chisinau

Moldova will consolidate its relations with its citizens living abroad due to the implementation of projects within the Moldova-EU Mobility Partnership, which was officially launched in Chisinau today.

The mobility partnerships represent new pilot EU instruments meant to manage the migration flows so as to meet the interests of the EU's, the partner countries and migrants. Moldova along with the Republic of Cabu Verde are the first two countries the EU signed mobility partnerships with.

Moldovan Deputy Foreign and European Integration Minister Valeriu Ostalep said that at the first stage of this partnership, Moldova could benefit from EU assistance of over three million euros. The proceeds will be used for the development of several projects in special sectors, like ensuring the social protection of Moldovans working abroad, border management, documents' security, the consolidation of capacities in the sector of migration control etc.

A representative of the European Commission s Delegation, Peter Bosch, stressed that Moldova is important for the EU, hence it is one of the first countries with which the EU will try to establish cooperation in the sector of migration. According to Bosch, the first results of this partnership will be visible next year, when several joint Moldovan-EU projects will be implemented.

Attending the event, the representative of France, country which holds the EU Presidency, Jean-Christophe Peaucelle, noted that migration is a challenge that should be settled at the global level. Peaucelle said that the European Union cannot solve this problem on its own, and that both the countries of destinations and those of transit and origin of migration should be involved in this process. The French official believes that in case the Mobility Partnership with Moldova will meet its goals, then the EU, Moldova and the migrants will have only to benefit from this cooperation.

The Declaration regarding the launching of the Moldova-EU Mobility Partnership was signed in Brussels on 5 June 2008.
