New border crossing procedure to be implemented in Ukraine

10 September 2008

This year, a joint decree by the Administration of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine and the State Customs Service of Ukraine approved a new technology of border and customs control at Ukrainian state border crossing points for road transport. It is going to become officially operating on 17 September, and the State Customs Service of Ukraine will host a seminar 12 September for heads of customs offices, customs posts, and border service branches on implementation of the technology.

The new processing scheme will exclude duplication of functions of border guards and customs officers as well as rule out performance of non-relevant tasks by them. A new level of interaction between control services will be worked through during the seminar and further on.

A number of elements assumed by the new technology are already known to many border traffic entities since their experimental implementation, but now they are properly regulated by normative documents. For example, they includes a system of “red” and “green” corridors that grants citizens the right to choose a traffic lane. Generally speaking, the novelties offer only additional conveniences to people crossing the border – for example, simplified clearance procedures for tourist and scheduled bus trips.
