| 9 September 2008 Vasyl Marmazov, Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, had a meeting with a delegation of the British Group in the Interparliamentary Union that had arrived in Ukraine upon the Verkhovna Rada’s invitation. In the course of the meeting, the Deputy Minister accentuated upon the matters relating to reform of the bodies of internal affairs. For example, Vasyl Marmazov touched upon the reform concept according to which the MIA of Ukraine is to become a civilian executive authority that would not only handle militia matters but also comply with norms and standards of a modern European state. In particular, Vasyl Marmazov informed the foreign guest on the establishment of the State Migration Service as well as on the tasks the Service handles now and will endeavor to fulfill in the future. Besides, the parties discussed problems of illegal migration related to Ukraine’s compliance with the obligations ensuing from the taking effect by the agreement on readmission with the European Union as well as considered general issues of the fight against organized crime in the context of cooperation with the EU Member States. The parties talked about the preparation of a new enhanced agreement on cooperation between Ukraine and the European Union that outlines obligations of both parties (both Ukraine and the EU) in cooperation against organized crime, border protection, counteraction to illegal migration movements, with collaboration in the filed of justice – judicial cooperation and human rights implementation in law enforcement activities.
