| 15 September 2008 From September 15 Latvian Pasports will be issued with fingerprints. They will be readable from the microchips only with special equipments. The goal of this additional security feature is to reduce counterfit passports and stealed identities. Since last November Latvian passports already issue passports with biometric photo. The new security feature will not increase price of the passports. Latvia and Germany are among the first EU countries, which fulfills EU regulation Nr.2252/2004 and EC Comission decision K/2006/2909, that all EU countries have to start issuance of electronic passports with two fingerprints in the microchip.
