| In addition to its regular programmes vested by the Red Cross mandate, the Lithuanian Red Cross Society (LRC) has been implementing a number of refugee assistance projects since 1996.
These projects are focused on several areas: legal assistance that includes free legal counselling of asylum seekers and refugees and their representation in appeal procedure within the framework of an agreement with the Ministry of Interior; social assistance that includes social integration assistance programme carried out in partnership with the Ministry of Social Security and Labour, through which refugees are assisted with accommodation, employment, Lithuanian language classes, as well as with lumpsum and in-kind grants; socialisation and integration programme for refugee children; and cultural and social projects aimed at fostering intercultural communication between asylum seekers and refugees; humanitarian assistance to asylum seekers and refugees accommodated in the Centre for Registration of Foreigners in Pabradė and in the Refugee Reception Centre in Rukla; monitoring activities that include border monitoring project and monitoring of asylum policy, legislative developments and administrative practices with further submission of proposals for new legal acts and amendments to the existing ones; various public information activities with a view to forming a positive public opinion and understanding of the situation of refugees, combating racism and xenophobia, and involving more volunteers in the LRC refugee assistance programmes.
Through the extensive international network of its organisations, the LRC provides assistance with search for relatives.
Within the framework of a co-operation agreement signed between the LRC, Kaunas University of Technology and UNHCR, a Refugee Social Clinic Project has been implemented since 2003. The social clinic is to provide future students with theoretical knowledge and practical skills in the field of social work with refugees.
Under a co-operation agreement between the LRC, Vilnius University, and UNHCR, a Refugee Legal Clinic Project is implemented, providing students with an opportunity to acquire practical skills in the field of refugee law. |
