Third Steering Committee Meeting13.02.2004 Vienna, Austria The third Steering Committee meeting took place on 13 February 2004 at IOM office in Vienna, Austria. The Steering Committee evaluated the activities carried out by the Secretariat since the last meeting in October 2003. These activities included: providing support in organising the Senior Level Review Meeting in Söderköping, Sweden in October 2003; setting up a network of experts from all the CBC/Söderköping process countries for information exchange; preparing, jointly with UNHCR, a project submission to the Council of Europe for organisation of a conference on complementary/subsidiary protection; preparing some analytical papers and compilations; publishing the second and third issues of the newsletter, compilations of materials of the Southern/Central Cluster Conference and the Senior Level Review Meeting, and a leaflet about the Söderköping process and the CBCP Secretariat; undertaking a joint UNHCR/CBCP Secretariat mission to Brussels for a briefing with EC officials; and holding a briefing for embassies and international organisations and a briefing for Ukrainian governmental and non-governmental organisations.
Based on the study of regional migration and asylum dialogue processes prepared by UNHCR HQ and the Secretariat’s paper, the Steering Committee discussed future directions of the Söderköping process with a view to ensuring its complementarity vis-à-vis other processes and better co-operation and co-ordination. The Steering Committee also considered setting a more effective steering mechanism for the process as a whole (at the moment, the Committee supervises the CBCP project only) as well as a progress monitoring structure.
The Steering Committee looked also into planning of activities for 2004-2005 and suggestions for the work plan prepared by the Secretariat.
