| 16 November 2007 On 15 November in Kyiv, the Chief Border Representatives of Ukraine and the Slovak Republic – Col. Gen. Mykola Lytvyn, Head of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine, and Mihal Borgulja, Director of Border and Alien Police, Slovak MIA, held bilateral consultative discussions. In the course of the meeting, the Heads of Border Agencies discussed the situation existing on the common border, considered the current cooperation, and outlined prospects of its development for 2008. Additionally, they exchanged information on the measures being taken to counteract illegal migration and smuggling on the border. Special attention was paid to Slovakia’s accession to the Schengen area and to possible problems that can arise out of that. The meeting between the Heads of Border Agencies of Ukraine and the Slovak Republic was linked to signature of the Cooperation Development Plan for 2008 that offers an improved procedure of information exchange in the interest of common border security. It also envisages finalizing of the Ukraine-Slovakia agreement on cooperation in border control of persons, goods and vehicles crossing the common state border; preparation for introduction of joint control at border crossing posts and for establishment of a common contact point; exchange of experience in the fight against organized crime, illegal migration, people smuggling and trafficking.
