Migration trends and demographic security discussed at IOM conference in Minsk

On 14-15 November 2007, Minsk hosts an international conference on migration trends and demographic security. The conference is organised by the IOM Office in Minsk and the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Belarus. UNICEF and UNFPA are the co-organisers of the event with the facilitation of the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA).

Representatives of international organisations, EU Member States, CIS countries and the Persian Gulf are scheduled to participate in the event.

Main issues to be raised at the conference are:

- main factors in demographic security and its influence on migration trends;

- management of migration processes in respect to demographic policies on the government;

- influence of illegal migration on demographic policy;

- features of migration policies in the CIS countries.

Participants will exchange latest experience and best practices in management of migration processes. The conference is taking place at the International Training Center, opened on 19 July 2007 by the IOM Director General, Brunson McKinley. Final document is expected to be adopted at the end of the conference.
