| 9 November 2007 The Republic of Moldova was elected as member of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) of the United Nations on November 8. The Moldovan Foreign Ministry says that Moldova obtained the status of ECOSOS member for the fist time since it joined the UN in 1992. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration, during three years starting January 1, 2008, Moldova will contribute to the settlement of the economic and social problems on the UN's agenda. In cooperation with other ECOSOC member states, Moldova will take part in debates over issues related to the world economy and development of international economic cooperation, will address social, cultural, education and health problems at international level. Special emphasis will be placed on the consolidation of the efforts of the international community in eradicating poverty, strengthening the global partnership for development and guaranteeing a sustainable economic growth. The UN Economic and Social Council assists the General Assembly in promoting international economic and social cooperation and development. ECOSOC has 54 members, all of whom are elected by the General Assembly for a three-year term. The president is elected for a one-year term and chosen amongst the small or middle powers represented on ECOSOC. ECOSOC meets once a year in July for a four-week session.//REPORTER.MD |
