| 25 October 2007 During 2004-2007, the number of Moldovan nationals working abroad doubled: from 24,645 on 1 January 2004 to 55,803 at the beginning of 2007, the study “La Popolazione Straniera Residente in Italia» carried out by the Italian National Institute of Statistics (ISTAT) highlights. According to the ISTAT, the Moldovan community is the fastest growing, followed by the Ukrainian, Ecuadorian and Romanian ones. The women make up 65% of the Moldovans in Italy. A number of 1,038 children were born by women with Moldovan nationality in Italy in 2005. Some 40.2% of these children have an Italian father, which shows that the Moldovans integrated highly with the Italian society. Though the number of Moldovans in Italy rose significantly during the last three years, the Moldovan community is not the most numerous. Albania places the first by the number of emigrants to Italy with 375,947 people. It is followed by Morocco with 343,228 and Romania with 342,200 people. The study shows that the number of emigrants to Italy increased from 1.99 million to 2.94 million over 2004-2007, a 47.7% increase. Last week, the Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi said that his government will not modify the open door policy on migration despite the large number of emigrants. //REPORTER.MD
