EU meeting to assess the asylum system in the Republic of Moldova

On 19 October 2007, Chisinau hosted a meeting to assess the asylum system in the Republic of Moldova that was organized by the European Commission’s delegation in Moldova in cooperation with the Ministry of Interior of the Republic of Moldova. Taking part in the meeting were representatives of embassies of the Czech Republic, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, IOM, UNHCR, as well as representatives of governmental and nongovernmental organizations.

The meeting was organized as a response to the Republic of Moldova’s participation in Brussels, in the framework of the Moldova-EU Action Plan, where the level of implementation of Regional Protection Programs in Moldova and future plans in this field were presented.

Besides, the meeting pointed out the high level of the Republic of Moldova’s involvement in Soderkoping Process, and throughout the meeting Moldova noted three basic areas for itself requiring urgent attention: completing repair of the Temporary Accommodation Center for asylum applicants (a unit for single women and unaccompanied minors), promoting bringing its legislation into conformity with the EU asylum regulations, and providing support for the development of regional refugee integration programs.

The event served as a basis for follow-up activities resulting in organization of a similar meeting in Minsk and Kyiv to evaluate the regional asylum situation considering that the Regional Protection Programs aim at three states: Ukraine, Moldova, and Belarus.
