Ukraine holds negotiations on easing visa regime with Latvia and Lithuania

10 October 2007

Ukraine plans to agree with Latvia and Lithuanian on procedures of easing visa regimes for long term stay, reports the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine. Bilateral migration-visa talks were held in Vilnius on 9 October and in Riga on 10 October respectively. The main aim of the negotiations is to eliminate negative consequences of enlargement of the Schengen agreement to include newly acceded EU Member States. Ukraine suggested signing inter-ministerial agreements, grounded on reciprocity, on preference visa issuance regime for Ukrainian nationals, as well as maximizing preference regime for nationals of Ukraine, Latvia and Lithuania.

The parties agreed to finalise a draft agreement shortly. Ukraine plans to sign agreements with Poland and Slovakia allowing travel of local population in border areas under simplified regime. This is linked to accession of Poland and Slovakia to the Schengen agreement.
