Danish Refugee Council starts project in Ukraine on building asylum capacities

Danish Refugee Council (DRC) commenced a project “Strengthening Asylum and Protection Capacity in Ukraine by Enhancing the Capacity of Governmental and Civil Society Stakeholders in a Participatory Approach and Cross-Sector Co-operation”.

The projects’ objectives in Ukraine will include:

  • Develop and improve state Refugee Status Determination (RSD) procedures and practice through support to the Ukrainian government via the secondment of experts
  • Strengthen the rights and obligations of asylum seekers through support to civil society through capacity building of selected NGOs
  • Increase awareness of implementation gaps in asylum and refugee protection through state-civil society dialogue in the form of joint workshops and training
  • The basis DRC’s role in Denmark
  • Part of the Danish RSD procedure
  • Counselling of asylum seekers
  • Coordinating functions for Danish lawyers and NGOs in the asylum field
  • Systematic monitoring of asylum practice
  • Consultative status on legislative developments in the field of asylum
  • Co-responsible for the selection of refugees for resettlement in Denmark under the UNHCR quota

The DRC works in 28 countries in support of displaced people, provides key interventions including humanitarian assistance and support for return and integration.

The DRC’s project in Ukraine is funded by the European Union and amounts to 427,517 Euro contribution from the EC.
