Ukraine and Poland held consular consultations

12 September 2007

On 11-12 September 2007, bilateral Ukrainian-Polish consultations were held in Kiev at the level of Directors of Consular Departments of MFAs.

Ukrainian delegation was headed by Mr. Borys Bazylevskyi, Head of Consular Department of MFA, and Mr. Yacek Unosh-Kisilevskyi, acting Head of the Consular department of the Polish MFA.

While opening the event, Deputy Head of the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr. M. Maimeskul, highlighted that Poland has always been a supporter of Ukrainian integration into the EU and stressed that consular-legal consultations were an important step in development of bilateral relations and safeguarding rights and interests of the citizen of both states.

Consular-legal issues discussed at the consultations were the following:
- state of implementation of the Consular Convention from 8 September 1991;
- state of implementation of the Bilateral Agreement on legal aid and legal matters in civil and criminal cases from 24 May 1993;
- set up a mechanisms of implementation of Bilateral agreement on mutual employment from 16 February 1994;
- state of play at the state border and perspectives for conclusion of Ukrainian-Polish agreement on local cross-border circulation.

In view of Poland's accession to the Schengen agreement and in order to minimise possible negative consequences for Ukrainian nationals, the parties agreed to discuss draft agreement between the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine and the Government of Poland on conditions of travel for nationals, which was signed on 30 July 2007. It is highly desirable that the agreement enters into force as soon as possible.
