| 9 September 2007 In order to prepare to join Schengen agreement, the Latvian Border Guards have installed automatic finger print identification system. The total costs were 1,06 mln Euro. Since 2004 Latvia is using EU finger-print's comparison system EURODAC, with help of which it is possible operatively to get information about persons and find out, if he or she has not applied for asylum in another EU country. The system allows quickly register and control illegal migrants and persons who cross the state border illegally. According to the Ministry of Interior of Latvia, the Border Guards will also be given rights to control traffic on water in the ports and in the border-waters.
