Basescu to negociate with EU visa granting to Moldova nationals

5 September 2007

Romanian President Traian Basescu is to offer the EU representatives a solution of visa granting to Moldovan nationals directly at the Customs Offices. The statement was made within the annual gathering of the Ambassadors and the general consuls accredited abroad, held in Bucharest. The Romanian President expressed concerns over the fact that the Moldovan nationals are still encountering difficulties in getting visas at the Romanian consulate in Chisinau. Basescu mentioned that he had already touched upon this issue within the meetings with the EU officials, stating that after joining the EU, Romanian " has created a real purgatory for the Moldovans who want to travel to Romania, the situation was easier even before the collapse of the USSR". "Romania is able to explain in Brussels, why it wants a simplified solution for visa granting to Moldovans. "The historical reality" concerning the two states is well-known in Brussels.", Romanian president emphasized.
