Every third citizen of Moldova works abroad

Every third citizen of Moldova works abroad during the recent two years, and 90% migrants work having no legal labor contract. According to the publication on “Moldova – Migration Problems” presented in Chisinau, about 273 thousand persons are temporarily absent from the country, most of whom staying abroad in search of a job. 130,000 Moldovan nationals, or 47.7%, stay abroad for over a year. Out of the total number of persons 89% are working abroad, 6.5% studying, and 5% are away from the country for other reasons.

The greatest share among the migrants belongs to former budget-funded employees who work as unskilled labor abroad (social care, homework). Out of the total number of the migrants, 32% are former physicians, teachers, and public civil servants, 26% being industry workers. More than 60% migrants are between 20 and 40 years of age.
