Moldova Azi, 30 July 2007

The remittances of the Moldovan workers from abroad make up about 27% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of Moldova. By the incomes from the remittances sent from abroad, Moldova places the second in the world, says the study “Republic of Moldova –Migration Problems”, which was launched in Chisinau last week. Togo tops the respective list, while Moldova is followed by Lesotho. The study shows that the share of the remittances in the GDP rose from 8% ($89.62m) in 1999 to 27 % ($854.57m) in 2006. The volume of remittances will grow the next years too, according to the study. The International Monetary Fund estimates that the remittances will reach $1.411 billion in 2008. To transfer the money, the Moldovans mostly use the transfer systems Western Union (over 50% in 2006), Money Gram, UniStream, Strada Italia, and Rus Express.
