Romania to build relations with Moldova according to EU standards

29 June 2007

Moldovan President Vladimir Voronin had a meeting with Romanian Prime Minister Calin Popescu-Tariceanu in Chisinau, reports the presidential press service. The two officials considered various issues related to the current stage and the prospects of developing the bilateral cooperation, expressing the mutual interest for reinforcing the Moldovan-Romanian dialogue on various plans. Voronin and Popescu-Tariceanu shared the same idea on the need for a pragmatic, open and sincere approach of all the aspects on the two countries' relations. Moldova and Romania must build their relations and their legal foundations in accordance with the EU standards. Romanian Prime Minister Calin-Taruceanu said on the results of his visit to Chisinau.

He considers that the model of the Basic Political Agreement between Romania and Moldova is completely obsolete, if the European practice is taken into consideration. "I think that our relations must be based on the deepening of cooperation and on supporting our strivings for our joint European future. It is my view of the political agreement, which can be considered and then signed. If we show flexibility and make mutual compromises, we shall be able to find decisions. The agreement must proceed from Moldova's sovereignty and independence", Popescu Tariceanu underlined. In his words, Romania greets Moldova's European strivings and Romania remains the strongest and constant support in this way. The Romanian Prime Minister said that in the course of his meeting with the Moldovan colleague the sides arrived at agreement on carrying on joint sittings of the Governments annually in turn, in Bucharest and in Chisinau. "We proposed to set up a Development and Cooperation fund in Romania for financing these projects", the Romanian Prime Minister underlined.
