Ukraine and EC discuss prospects of future cooperation in the field of justice, freedom and security

On 11 June Justice and Home affairs ministers of Ukraine and the EU Troika gathered for the fifth meeting in Luxemburg to discuss further cooperation between the EU and Ukraine in the field of justice, freedom and security.

During the meeting, Minister of Justice Oleksandr Lavrynovych and representatives of the Ministry of justice and Ministry of internal affairs informed the EU on working priorities and measures aimed to improve their activities. The questions to be raised in reports include, inter alia, strengthening of Ukraine’s judicial system, combating corruption, and border management.

Representatives of the German Presidency in the EU informed of the results of work in the field of justice, freedom and security which took place within the framework of implementation of the Ukraine-EU Action Plan. For example, the coverage will include Ukraine-EU cooperation within Europol and Eurojust, in the field of migration and asylum as well as combating organized crime and terrorism including the efforts aimed to fight money laundering, human and drugs trafficking.

It is expected that the meeting will define cooperation priorities for the next year that will see Portugal’s Presidency in the EU.

Oleksandr Lavrynovych said also that working agreements were expected to be signed during the meeting on the establishment of operational cooperation between Ukraine, represented by the State Border Guard Service, and the European Agency for the Management of Operational Cooperation at the External Borders of the Member States of the European Union (FRONTEX).

The parties discussed the achieved progress in preparation of the agreements on visa facilitation regime and on readmission between Ukraine and the EU, which are expected to be signed within the Cooperation Council’s immediate meeting.
