Latvia tightens its rules to prevent illegal migration

7 June 2007

Latvian Parliament increased the Border Guards’ responsibilities in order to fight illegal migration. Now the BG officials will have rights to control residence of foreigners, including in the premises of employers and to urge any person to provide the information on issues related to travel and residence details. If an apprehended person demonstrates resistance, BG officials will have the right to use special devices and dogs. It could be done also in situations, when there will be grounds to suppose, that a person could try escape or there are signs that he is dangerous for other people. As explained at the Ministry of Interior, illegal migration is increasing in the EU, thus every country needs to allocate additional resources to control it.
