New border check point opened at the Lithuanian-Russian border

11 May 2007

On 10 May 2007, a new Bardinai Frontier Station was opened under the command of the Pagėgiai Frontier District of the State Border Guard Service of Lithuania. The frontier station is located in the village of Bardėnai, Pagėgiai District Municipality. The frontier station is tasked to secure a border section considered one of the most sensitive in Lithuania due to incessant attempts at smuggling contraband from the Kaliningrad Region, Russia. That is why this frontier station has received a portion of UNISAS uniform border control system installations within its operations sector. The minister of the interior of Lithuania, underlined that the border guards and state-of-the-art equipment of the new frontier station would stand up to expectations. "Proper security standards at the European Uni on borders are not just a guarantee of our physical safeness. An obligation is upon us to interrupt processes that jeopardise the fundamentals of the economy of Lithuania and the whole European Community," said the Minister. The new frontier station provides excellent work and rest facilities for seventy border guard officials.

The modern frontier station was constructed applying Schengen Facility funds and is worth a total of LTL 4 million 827 thousand, equipment included. The area of the two-storey building of the frontier station is 753 square meters. Together with a communication tower it is situated on a 1.4-hectare plot of land. The new building provides all facilities needed for border guards service: a small hall for meetings, workrooms for desk officers and other officials, rooms for arms storage, temporal detention and auxiliary equipment. There is a parking lot for detained vehicles. Amenities for border guards include a kitchen, rooms for dining and drying, men's and women's lockers, and washing machines.

In the operations sector of the frontier station, a UNISAS border control system has been installed. The system provides border guards with technical assets for detecting offences at the border with Russia in all weather conditions and enables to take response measures any time of day. UNISAS, which is a complex of engineering constructions and telecommunication networks, has been installed and made operational at the most vulnerable sections of the Lithuanian land and water borders, traffic-intensive border crossing points and uninterruptedly controlled areas.

Lithuanian border guards protect and control one-tenth of the whole EU external border, a total of 1043 km. Schengen Facility funds, worth LTL 393 million, have been allocated for border guards equipment procurement and infrastructure renovation programmes.
