| 5 April 2007 4-7 million Ukrainians leave the country to work abroad thereby making Ukraine a fragile country if terms of loss of its labor resource”, Ukrainian Minister for Economy Anatoliy Kinakh believes. “Wages in Ukraine are very low. Over the recent few years, distance on these indicators between us and our neighbors has grown considerably”, he stated at a press conference. According to his data, Ukraine is two times behind Russia in terms of average wage, and three or four times behind the Baltic countries. The situation is worsened by negative demographic prospects: as reported by the UN, the country will become shortly a leader countries whose population decrease drastically, and by 2050 Ukraine might be populated by 36 million instead of present 47 mln. To solve this problem, the Ministry of Economy as an important factor for development of a state labour program that should include, inter alia, reduction of pressure on state wage reserve and gradually increase of labor productivity. Besides, as Kinakh pointed out, competitiveness of Ukraine’s economy remains low while the GDP growth depends on external market. According to the minister, Ukraine ranks 78th in terms of economic competitiveness (among 125 countries) while Poland has position 48 and Russia 62, as international experts concluded |
