| 12 April 2007 On 11 April, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine has approved the agreement – in the form of exchange of notes – between the Government of Ukraine, the Government of the Republic of Moldova, and the European Commission concerning extension of the mandate for the EU Border Assistance Mission to Moldova and Ukraine (EUBAM) for next two years (2008-2009). Upon the exchange of notes, the decision will come into force. As reported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, extension of the EU Mission’s mandate will promote strengthening of new stage of relations between Ukraine and the EU. This will also have positive impact upon full-fledged realization of the memorandum of understanding concerning the EU Border Assistance Mission to Moldova and Ukraine, settlement of Transdnistrian conflict by reinforcing the Moldovan border security, and compliance with a unified customs regime based on international standards. Upon adoption of this decision, the Government of Ukraine empowered relevant executive authorities to find ways and solocultions on how Ukrainian-Moldova border should be equipped in order to have a modern integral border control system in accordance with the EU standards. As a result of progress achieved by the Mission, a new unique system of experience exchange and cooperation in border management is being formed in the European area, the MFA points out. “Ukraine will be meeting agreements with the European Commission and the Republic of Moldova in the spirit of full partnership and transparency and it will do its best so that the Mission’s activities be successful”, the MFA emphasizes.
