| 27 March 2007 Prime Ministers of Latvia and Russia Aigars Kalvitis and Mikhail Fradkov signed a border treaty between the two states on 27 March. Latvia voiced its satisfaction with signing of the agreement that will clearly set borders of both states and open a way towards a more intencified Latvia-Russia dialog both in the political and economic field. According to Kalvitis, the border treaty does not question legal continuity of Latvia’s statehood. Signing of a Latvian-Russian border treaty had earlier been supported by the US, Sweden, Germany, and other countries pointing out that the agreement would be important not only for Latvia but for the entire EU and that it would promote better relations between the countries. After signing of the agreement it is to be ratified by parliaments of both countries. Latvian diplomats are currently working to organize a meeting between presidents of Latvia and Russia upon ratification. On behalf of the European Union the Presidency welcomes the signing of this treaty. It is a sign of the increasing confidence between Latvia and Russia and a contribution to the deepening of a partnership between the EU and the Russian Federation based on trust. The European Union looks forward to early ratification of the treaty.
