Cooperation between border guard services of Poland and Ukraine

6 March 2007

When visiting Ukraine, a Polish delegation headed by the Minister of Interior Janusz Kaczmarek visited the Administration of the State Border Service of Ukraine. The delegation included officials of the Ministry of Interior and Administration of Poland, and Gen. Myroslaw Kusmierczak, Chief Commandant of the Polish Border Guards. The parties discussed the current situation at the common state border segment as well as prospects of future cooperation for efficient counteraction to trans-border illegal activities.

Janusz Kaczmarek highly appreciated the existing cooperation between border agencies of the two countries. Cooperation between Ukrainian and Polish border agencies has recently become closer and more efficient. A whole package of documents has been signed relating to operational activities, fight agailst corruption, cooperation in the introduction of a threat and criminal analysis system. At present, two joint advisory points are working in the common border segment, and joint patrolling is carried out. Besides, Ukrainian and Polish border guards have experience in joint operations. The Polish Minister of Interior emphasized the importance of the Ukrainian-Polish border calling it one of Europe’s largest (542 km long, with 12 border checkpoints on it). The Head of the State Border Service of Ukraine in turn came out with an initiative of introducing joint border control at every automobile border checkpoint to improve quality and timely control procedure.

The system of Ukrainian border management in the Detached Operational Information Center was demonstrated to the members of the Polish delegation. During the demonstration, the parties learned the situation on the Ukrainian-Polish border through on-line video broadcasting from Ukrainian state border check points.
