Latest International Cooperation the Border Guard Service of Latvia

For the first two months of 2007 the State Border Guard Service of Latvia have been engaged actively into the following international activities:

1. In cooperation with the British peace keeping project on 1-11 March the BG conducts an international seminar "Integrated trainings for the management of security services in Europe". The first part focuses on intensive English language training, and the second addresses special terminology used in Border Guards vocabulary. Among participants there are representatives from border guards’ authorities, migration specialists, police, security police, customs and law enforcement officials from Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Poland, Germany, Romania, Macedonia and Ukraine.

2. At the end of February, a visit from the Border Guard Service from Belarus was conducted to Latvia with an aim to exchange experience on prevention of document fraud. Latvian and Belarusian colleagues have exchanged latest experience in the field of prevention of issuance of fraud documents and reiterated the necessity to cooperate in future in this field.

3. On 27-28 February Latvia took over the Presidency of the Border Guard section of the Baltic Council of Ministers in Vilnius. The three heads of the Baltic States Border Guards and other senior officials have exchanged views and plans for preparation to full Schengen Acqui implementation, as well as about the progress in Schengen Facility implementation. During 2007 Latvia will organize expert meetings on information about the flow of illegal migrants to EU, especially when using fraud EU passports. It is also planned to conduct an international conference to fight illegal migration on the Baltic borders.
