Border Guards Agencies of Ukraine and Poland Deepen Cooperation

Mr. Pavlo Shysholin, First Deputy Head of the State Border Guards of Ukraine, and Mr. Miroslav Kusmerchaka, Head of the Polish Border Guards, met in Lviv, western Ukraine, to discuss issues of cross-border cooperation between the two countries. The meeting aimed at looking into successful bilateral cooperation reached in 2006 on issues of common interest such as functioning of common border check points, ensuring security of common border, controlling of the cross-border movements. In 2006, at the Ukrainian-Polish border 18 mln. of crossings was recorded by individual persons and 6 mln. by vehicles.

Ukrainian border guards have apprehended 118 persons with forged travel documents, 30 persons had no documents at all, whereas 33 persons possessed false documents. In total 3,360 persons were apprehended.

Mr. Shysholin expressed his gratitude to the Polish side for extending support in the development of risks analysis system and criminal analysis at the State Border Guards Service of Ukraine. Likewise, he thanked the Polish Government for training of the Ukrainian Border Guards, implemented through projects with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Poland, active participation of the Polish experts in “HUREMAS” project. As a result of the meeting, on 15 February, an Action Plan on operational cooperation was signed between the two border guards’ agencies for 2007.
