New Bridge Between Romania and Ukraine

15.01.2007

A new automobile bridge was opened on 15 January between Romania and Ukraine across the Tisa River and a border checkpoint in Sighetu Marmatiei, north Romania. The inauguration ceremony was attended by the Ukrainian and Romanian presidents Viktor Yushchenko and Traian Basescu. A new transport route will link Romania with Ukraine’s Solotvina and simplify automobile traffic between the two countries. It will help step up Romanian-Ukrainian trade and ease contacts between the Romanian Diaspora in Ukraine and the Ukrainian Diaspora in Romania. Basescu pointed out that Romania would like to become a linkage between Ukraine, the EU and the North-Atlantic Alliance. He said the EU has allocated 120 million euros for deeper cooperation among Romania, Ukraine and Moldova.

The two countries’ presidents agreed to increase the number of border checkpoints and implement joint regional projects. Ukraine will introduce a visaless regime for citizens of Romania and other EU countries, while the Ukrainians will be able to get a Romanian visa for free, Yushchenko said.
